First, let me be clear that Raag Bhairo and Raag Bhairav are the same. Just a bit of a difference in accents. Raag Bhairo is the flag bearer of Thaat Bhairo. Not only is it one of the few Raag taught to beginners of HCM, it is also one of the most prominent.

Some people think of this Raag as Sad. But my own view is that it’s not a sad Raag, but is one that creates a sense of seriousness, introspection, devotion, a mood that says, “Help Me God, I Need You!”

Notice how all the Sur are Shudh, except for r and d. Many people even opt to skipping r and P in the Arohi, like this: S G m d P - G m d N S'. Similarly in Amrohi, G is skipped, like this: G m r S.

As for the Chalan, this Raag is not one that frollicks from one Sur to another quickly. It’s Alaap are extremely strong, unlike that of Raag Bahar for example. Each note is exposed and a Maqam is created for that note. It’s best not to use too much Gamak in this Raag, although Meend is used very often. These maybe the reasons why it’s given to students to study early on.

Similar to Raag Bhairavi, Raag Bhairo is known to be one of the most ancient of Raag in the HCM. Although in Hindu Myth, Raag Bhairo is considered to be the very first Raag to be created by Hindu Lord Shiva. It is since then, that Raag Bhairo has been used in worships to invoke various Hindu dieties.
