Today’s Raag, we’ll talk about Aiman, which is the quint essential Raag of the love and romance category. It is made up of all 7 Sur. S and P as always are Atal Sur. And R G M D N are all Tayvar Sur. Therefore, an easy way to remember Raag Aiman is to keep in mind that it has no Komal Sur. This is the most famous of all Raag and usually the first Raag to be taught to the HCM students. It is also the flag bearer Raag of the Kalyan Thaat Family.

The thing that most students stumble with when learning this Raag is due to its similarity with Raga Aiman Kalyan, also known as Raag Yaman Kalyan. Both are very similar except that Aiman does NOT deviate to any Komal Sur. While Raag Aiman Kalyan uses both types of M and m. I’ll say it again in case this point is still vague. Raag Aiman is NOT same as Raag Aiman Kalyan.

Now, if you’ve looked around on the web for Raag Yaman, you’re bound to come across the fact that this is usually the first Raag to be taught. But the question is, Why? The answer is two pronged:

  1. It is made up of all Tayvar Sur. So it’s super easy to memorize and recall.
  2. But Hazrat Ameer Khusrau (the person credited for creating Aiman), used Aiman to  render Tarana bol. This Tarana would start before any Qawwali concert.

So it was in the best interest of the students to learn Aiman first due to it’s practical usability. Although, Aiman Tarana was later exchanged for another composition known as Qaul, that used Raag Aiman Kalyan instead of Aiman. But the teaching method for the students remained the same through out the ages.

Few cool things about Aiman are that it’s one of most used Raag in Ghazal, Light Classical Songs, as well as even Bollywood songs and Qawwali. It is sweet through and through. Depending on it’s composition, it can be made sad by longing or happy by union moods.

Raag Aiman is first of all, the same exact Raag known as Yaman to many North Indians, and known as Kalyani to the South Indians. At this time, both names Aiman and Kalyan refer to the same Raag. However, Aiman was brought over by the Persians (Hazrat Ameer Khusrau in particular) at the time when Persian Music started to entangle within the confines of Hindustani Music. It is said that what was called Raag Kalyan during the Pre-Persian arrival, was experimented with to create Raag Aiman by Persians.

Even the name itself is a point of argument. Many say that Yaman derives from the word Yamuna, the auspicious river. However, that is not so. When the Hindi and Carnatic speaking musicians were introduced to Aiman, their auto responsive accent for that name would force them to call it Yaman. That was the reason many started calling it Kalyan instead due to it’s name Kalyani in Carnatic Music.

Interestingly, there could be yet another explanation. The name Yaman may have come from Yavan. Which was used in ancient Sanskrit to label the non-natives. This may possibly unravel the use of multiple names for this single Raag. While the Persians (non-natives) call it Aiman, the locals who aren’t able to pronounce it, end up calling it Yaman instead.

Whatever the case of it’s origin may be…Aiman is one of the sweetest and heart touching of the Raag.
